Supporting others
How to be there for a loved one in life’s hardest moments.
When a loved one is going through a hard time, it’s not always easy to know how to support them. If you’re struggling with what to say or do, we’re here to help.
If someone you love is struggling, don’t wait to reach out.
Here are four concrete suggestions:
Send a text
“It’s so unfair that you’re going through this. It’s ok to not be ok.”
Provide practical support
“I’m picking up some household supplies—anything you need? Toilet paper? Cheez-its? Laundry detergent?
Respond on social media
“This sucks. Thank you for letting us know what’s going on. I’m sending you a message to connect offline if you’d like to—no pressure to respond.”
Let them know you’re there for the long haul
“I’m here for whatever happens. Is it okay if I check in on you again next week?”
Remember to take care of yourself, too. It’s normal to feel sad, angry, and overwhelmed when someone you love is going through a hard time. Caring for yourself makes it easier to show up for others, and there areeveryday practices that can help.
There’s no one “right” way to support someone
But research shows that no matter what your loved one is going through, these everyday actions can help.
